The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize is an inspiration for scientific researchers and innovators to persist in innovative exploration, establish themselves in Hong Kong, serve the nation, and contribute to the world. This year, the Prize is sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and will reward outstanding scientists for their achievements in advancing the frontiers of scientific research as well as their influence and transformational impact.
The Prize consists of three annual awards, including the Prize in Astronomy, the Prize in Life Science and Medicine, and the Prize in Mathematical Sciences. This year, the Shaw Prize in Astronomy was awarded to Shrinivas R Kulkarni of the California Institute of Technology for his discoveries on millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts and other variable and transient astronomical objects; and the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine was shared by Swee Lay Thein of the University of Maryland and Stuart Orkin of Harvard Medical School for their breakthrough studies into the genetic and molecular mechanisms of sickle cell anemia and beta-thalassemia, two deadly blood diseases that affect millions worldwide.
In his address to the award ceremony, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu praised the Shaw Prize laureates for expanding the horizons of scientific possibilities for humanity. He noted that the work of a changemaker requires scientific spirit, insatiable curiosity and resolute perseverance. He also said that the HKSAR government is determined to develop Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub, and to promote postsecondary education to help students thrive in a fast-changing world.
For the first time, the Prize will include a Public Vote Prize in order to encourage participation by all Hong Kong residents. A total of HK$10,000 will be awarded to the student artist whose artwork receives the most votes by the general public. In addition, HK$3,000 will be given to the winner’s school.
The public can vote for their favourite works on the hk prize website or Facebook page until 30 June. The winning works will be displayed in the Hong Kong Arts Centre from September.
The Hong Kong Cup 2024 will feature a record-breaking prize money and incentives package, with an overall purse of over HK$1.62 billion. The total prize money has been boosted by 11.5% in comparison with last season, with the highest prize for the long-distance races increasing by more than 30% to HK$8 million. The top four players in the final will be awarded a total of $35,550, 165 ranking points and a medal, while those who reach the quarterfinals will get $20,555 plus 50 ranking points. The winner will be named at the award ceremony on 10 September. The tournament is run by the Hong Kong Jockey Club and supported by the Hong Kong Sports Development Fund. The club has also introduced a bonus system for the 2024 edition to further support owners who invest in high-quality racehorses. This will further enhance the quality of racing and attract more overseas jockeys to Hong Kong.
